The American couple, who tied the knot in an old torpedo
factory in Virginia last weekend, were using the lift to head down to the
riverfront for the ceremony before it shuddered to a stop trapping their entire
wedding party in it.
The couple, as well as their parents, grandparents,
photographers, wedding planner, rabbi and bridesmaids were holed up in the lift
for enough time to worry the rest of the guests.
“When we were getting in, Liz’s mum goes, ‘Gee, this is a
lot of people, I hope we don’t get stuck,’” Stein recalled to ABC News.
But instead of stressing about how late they would be for
the ceremony, the trapped wedding guests used the time to snap some selfies.
Talk about making lemonade out of lemons.
The bride “just started posing for pictures,” Christy
Kissick, one of the photographers, said. “She was so calm and level-headed.”
“I freaked out, other people would’ve freaked out, and it
would have ruined the rest of the day,” said Copeland.
It all ended well with Kissick pressing the emergency call
button, dispatching the local fire department who got all 24 people out safely.
And the couple managed to get hitched that same day – just slightly later than
planned.
“Because of the delay, we were treated to a beautiful sunset
ceremony,” Copeland said.
